Initiation Of Those Spiritually Endowed From Birth
The Concept Of Igbakhuan In Benin, Nigeria (were I hail from)
We believe that the soul of a baby could come from any worlds, such as the plant kingdom, animal kingdom — reptiles e.g. snakes, crocodiles, alligators, etc. mammals, e.g. pigs, cow, dogs, monkey, rodents, etc. birds e.g. vultures, hawk, condors, etc. or fish among others. Many children suspected to be from this world are maligned as igbakhuan.
The society may call those above four or five years, witches for reasons given below. They label a related group of children under the age of four as igbakhuan. These are children who may display powers of prophecy or extrasensory perception. The general reaction of adults is that these children see too much or make statements that are above their age or reserved for priests with exceptional qualities.
The traditional belief is that these children called igbakhuan are possessed by ancestral or other spirits who could ruin the family or community. They are perceived otherwise as bearers of a curse or evil spirits! The main difference between igbakhuan and “child-witch” therefore, is not only a question of age; rather igbakhuan are considered victims of demonic possession, incarnation from the animal kingdom as listed at the begining of this page, or freaks of creation while ”child-witch” are considered to be initiates into secret occult or witchcraft coven.
Of particular interest to us is the power or forces at play during the exploits associated with sorcery or craft of the "child-witch" and the extraordinary spiritual or intellectual capabilities of the so-called igbakhuan. We seek to harness the powers and control the capabilities through training and divine initiation. The powers when so controlled can be applied for the good of the individual, society, and humanity.

Some Children Are Murdered
Many parents and the priesthood misunderstand and fear that the spiritually gifted child could become a “child-witch”, or worse - an igbakhuan. Hence, they would stop at nothing to prevent this, including torturing and murdering the child. We do not defend the witch or wizard as such; we are simply saying that these children are more likely to be victims who do not understand what is happening around or through them, let alone control it.
These children are saved through divine initiation.
Some Spritually Endowed Cannot Be Initiated Into The Astral
Some persons cannot be successfully initiated mundanely. Thus their immunity appears strange to the average person who sees them consequently in a sense that they are weird or odd and defy "treatment". The relatives, who do not understand their special status and needs, keep spending their meagre resources on trying to “cure” or “buy” them; this is of course a horrendous burden to them. “Buying” those mean making blood and related sacrifices in large quantities and over a long period. Parents and the priesthood fear that the child is becoming igbakhuan or “child-witch”.
Meanwhile, their parents and relatives try to make them amenable to spiritual influences or witchcraft-related rituals and voodoo initiation based on surrender and absorption into fetish deities and gods like “normal” people do. They are perceived wrongly as burdens to themselves, parents, family, and society. Some parents would go as far as to poison a child that shows the trait. They are persecuted. Some are bludgeon to death in the attempt to drive out what they think is an evil spirit that either obsess them or possess them. People attempt to cure them through exorcism. I narrowly missed suffering this fate as a child.
Divine Initiation Is A Cure
The person is eventually left to his/her fate - if lucky. The unlucky ones are either murdered or die from poisoning occasioned by the toxicity of the several potions that they are made to ingest as part of the treatment. Yet others become adepts as oboiro or spiritual healers as they go through repeated exposure to certain treatments.
The whole ordeals that they were subjected to add up to initiatory experiences. The surviving ones may refine the crude and cruel treatment methods to counsel and “heal” others.
Some of these become revealers of MYSTERIES.
